Vraic and Potato Fields on the Channel Islands
The main use of vraic is for spreading over potato fields during the winter. It is then ploughed into the soil before the potatoes are planted in late winter and spring. Vraic was traditionally gathered by horse and cart in Grouville Bay and St Ouen’s Bay, and in smaller quantities at Le Hocq and Havre des Pas. The practice continues using tractors and trailers, although the quantity taken has diminished over the years.

Charlotte Marchina’s ‘Nomad’s Land’ investigates the relationship that nomadic herders maintain with their environment in Mongolia and South Siberia. The book focuses on how the herders occupy space, and share it with non-human beings, be they domestic animals, wild, or invisible entities. For the cartography GPS data is used of the nomadic itineraries and the daily journeys of different herds on the pastures. The maps offer a better understanding of all the complexity of the relations at stake between the breeders, their animals – horses, camels, cattle, sheep, goats and dogs – and their shared environment, as well as the ways in which social and ecological systems interact with one another.

This book is considered a classic amongst the sparse Moken ethnographic literature. The author was a man with an inquiring mind, full of curiosity, who wished to go beyond the limits of his missionary tasks and to relate the story of his personal and research experiences among the sea nomads. The book reveals the life of the Moken at the beginning of the century in a very vivid manner. Published in 1922 it sums up the author’s fieldwork observations dating from 1911.
